As an Agroecology and Agroforestry Researcher at Tay Bac University, I work on sustainable farming systems in the Northern Midlands and Mountainous Region of Vietnam. My work focuses on agroecology, agroforestry, soil conservation, organic agriculture, food crops, and agricultural extension.
Agroecology and Agroforestry Researcher
I teach Agroecology, Agricultural Extension, and Food Crops at Tay Bac University. In addition, I conduct research on practical farming issues in midland and mountainous areas. These issues include soil erosion, low soil fertility, sloping land, and changing farmer needs.
My work connects teaching, field research, farmer training, and model development. Therefore, I focus on solutions that farmers can use in real production conditions.
Soil Conservation Research
From 2010 to 2021, I studied soil erosion in maize-based farming systems. I carried out field surveys and designed field experiments. I also monitored soil loss, crop growth, and farming practices.
Through this work, I evaluated methods to reduce soil erosion and improve soil fertility. As a result, my research helped identify better practices for farmers on sloping land. These practices support more stable crop production and better land use.
Agroforestry Systems
From 2012, I researched agro forestry systems for upland and midland farming areas. I designed, tested, and monitored agro forestry models under local conditions.
Moreover, I studied how farmers can combine annual crops, perennial trees, and soil conservation measures. This approach can improve land-use efficiency. It can also reduce land degradation and support household income.
Organic Agriculture
I served as the principal investigator of a provincial-level project on organic vegetable production in Son La Province. In this role, I coordinated research activities and developed technical guidelines.
Furthermore, I organized field trials and demonstration models with local farmers. I also assessed the feasibility of organic vegetable production for farming households. Therefore, the project provided useful evidence for applying organic methods in local conditions.
Cropping and Livestock Systems
Besides crop research, I have experience with sustainable cropping systems and integrated crop–livestock farming models. I worked with farmers, extension officers, local authorities, and technical agencies.
Together, we tested farming practices that fit local ecological and social conditions. Consequently, these models aimed to improve production, reduce environmental risks, and support farmer livelihoods.
Training and Standards
I hold certification as a VietGAP assessment expert in crop production. This strengthens my knowledge of good agricultural practices, farm assessment, and production standards.
In addition, I joined training programs on the System of Rice Intensification, or SRI. These programs supported government officials, extension workers, and farmers in Son La, Dien Bien, and Lai Chau provinces.
Overall, my work supports sustainable agriculture in the Northern Midlands and Mountainous Region of Vietnam. It combines research, training, field experiments, and practical farming models.
